Set-top box or media player: when you need one and which to choose
What is the difference between a set-top box and a streaming media player, when is one worth buying, and how do you choose a safe, certified device?
In short
- A set-top box is a receiver supplied or recommended by the provider; a media player is a general device on which you install the provider's app.
- For an older TV, a weak smart TV system or 4K content, a good media player can make a big difference.
- Choose an officially certified device from a well-known manufacturer and avoid "fully loaded" boxes.
Set-top box or media player?
- Set-top box (STB)
- A receiver supplied or specifically recommended by the provider. With managed-network IPTV it is often the only option; for example, Stream Technology's IPTV service works with a device supplied by the provider.
- Streaming media player
- A general device (for example an Android TV or Google TV based player) on which you can install the app of any supported service from the official store.
When is a media player worth buying?
- if your TV is not a smart TV, or its system is no longer updated;
- if the TV's menu is slow and apps stutter;
- if you want 4K, HDR or better audio formats that the TV's built-in system does not support;
- if you want the same interface on several TVs.
What to look for when buying
| Aspect | What to check |
|---|---|
| Certification | Official Android TV/Google TV certification; many providers require Widevine L1 for HD and 4K |
| Resolution and HDR | 4K, HDR10, possibly Dolby Vision if your TV supports it too |
| Codecs | Hardware decoding of HEVC and ideally AV1 |
| Network | Ethernet port, Wi‑Fi 5 or Wi‑Fi 6 |
| Updates | A well-known manufacturer with regular security updates |
| Remote control | Voice control and shortcut buttons make it easier to use |
Avoid "fully loaded" boxes

- Initial setupSign in to the platform account (for example a Google account) and install updates.
- The service's appInstall it from the official store, then activate the device. See: activating a device with a code.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a set-top box for Streamy?
No. Streamy runs as an app on Android TV/Google TV and Samsung smart TVs and on Android and iOS devices. For an older TV, an Android TV or Google TV based media player can be used.
Why can't I watch content in 4K on my player?
For 4K, the content, the package, the player (Widevine L1, HEVC), the HDMI input (HDCP 2.2) and the internet connection must all support it.
