How much internet do you need for IPTV? Bandwidth table
How many Mbit/s you need for SD, HD and 4K TV, how to calculate for several TVs, and how to measure whether your connection is fast enough – with a simple table.
In short
- Indicative values per stream: 3–4 Mbit/s for SD, 5–6 for HD, 6–10 for Full HD and 15–25 for 4K.
- Simultaneous streams and other household internet traffic add up; allow 30–50% headroom.
- Stability matters as well as speed; measure where the TV actually stands.
Bandwidth needed by picture quality
| Picture quality | Resolution | Recommended speed per stream |
|---|---|---|
| SD | 576p | 3–4 Mbit/s |
| HD | 720p | 5–6 Mbit/s |
| Full HD | 1080p | 6–10 Mbit/s |
| 4K UHD | 2160p | 15–25 Mbit/s |
Thanks to adaptive bitrate, the player also works on slower connections, just at lower quality. The table shows what you need for the selected quality to run steadily without buffering.
Work out your household's needs
- How many streams run at once?Think about your busiest time, for example the evening.
- Add up the streamsUse the upper values from the table above.
- Allow for other usageAn HD video call needs roughly 2–4 Mbit/s, plus downloads, updates and online gaming.
- Add headroomAllow 30–50% extra, because Wi‑Fi and evening peak times can reduce the actual speed.
Speed is not everything
- Latency (ping)
- How long a data packet takes to get there and back. Less critical for TV than for online gaming, but very high values can make channel switching slow.
- Jitter
- Fluctuation in latency. With high jitter, the player buffers more.
- Packet loss
- Lost data packets that have to be resent. Even a few per cent can cause buffering; weak Wi‑Fi is a common cause.
How to measure your connection
- Measure where the TV isIf possible on the TV or media player itself, otherwise with a phone next to the TV.
- Measure at evening peak time tooNetworks are busier in the evening; that is when you find out the speed actually available.
- Compare wired and Wi‑Fi resultsIf there is a big difference, your home Wi‑Fi is the bottleneck.
- Compare with your subscriptionIf the measured speed is consistently well below what your contract promises, tell your internet provider. In Hungary you can also make a certified measurement with the NMHH's broadband measurement system (Szélessáv.net).
If the speed is not enough
- Connect the TV by cable or improve Wi‑Fi coverage. See: Wi‑Fi or cable?
- Schedule large downloads and updates for times when nobody is watching TV.
- Choose a lower picture quality on less important screens.
- If bandwidth is permanently short, consider a faster internet package.
Frequently asked questions
Is 10 Mbit/s enough for IPTV?
Usually yes for a single HD stream, but if someone else is using the internet at the same time or two TVs are on, it may not be enough. It is not enough for 4K.
Does upload speed matter?
For watching TV, download speed is what matters; upload speed mainly matters for video calls and uploading files.
How much internet do I need for 4K?
15–25 Mbit/s per stream is recommended, and at least 30 Mbit/s with headroom if others in the household use the connection too.
