IPTV packages and prices: what determines what you pay?

What drives the price of an IPTV or TV package? Channel rights, sport, picture quality, device limits, minimum terms and promotions – and how to compare offers.

Updated: 2 min read

In short

  • Most of the fee covers channel distribution rights – premium sports and film channels are especially expensive.
  • Besides the package content, the price depends on picture quality, the number of devices, features and the contract term.
  • Compare offers by total cost: including the fee after the promotion, one-off fees and add-ons.

What makes up the price?

  • Channel rights – the provider pays broadcasters per channel; sports and film channels are the most expensive.
  • Royalties – fees paid to collective management organisations for works included in programmes.
  • Technology – compression, content delivery network (CDN), copy protection, app development.
  • Customer service and operations – fault repair, complaint handling, billing.
  • Tax – in Hungary, fees include 27% VAT.

One-off and recurring fees

App-based (OTT) services usually only have a monthly fee. With cable or managed-network IPTV, one-off fees may also apply, such as connection, call-out or equipment fees. Fees are listed in the provider's terms and conditions; Stream Technology's documents are on the documents page.

Promotions and minimum terms

Many providers offer a discount if you stay subscribed for a set period (minimum term). This is worthwhile if you are sure you will use the service for the whole period. If you cancel early, you usually have to repay the discount received. Details: contracts, minimum terms and cancellation.
