IPTV on a Smart TV: which TVs work and how to install it

Android TV, Google TV, Samsung Tizen and other smart TVs: how to watch IPTV on a Smart TV, what to check when buying, and what to do with an older TV.

Updated: 3 min read

In short

  • Smart TVs run IPTV services through apps installed from the manufacturer's official app store; the most common platforms are Android TV/Google TV, Samsung Tizen and LG webOS.
  • Streamy is available on Android TV/Google TV and Samsung smart TVs, with a step-by-step guide for each.
  • With an older TV, a media player or set-top box connected via HDMI makes IPTV possible.

Smart TV platforms at a glance

Android TV and Google TV
Google's TV operating system, running on TVs from many manufacturers and on many media players. Apps are installed from Google Play.
Samsung Tizen
Samsung's own smart TV system; apps are available from the TV's app store (Apps).
LG webOS
LG's smart TV system, with its own app store.
Other systems
Several manufacturers use their own or less common platforms. The range of services on these may be more limited.

Whether a service's app is available on your TV depends on the platform and often on the TV's year of manufacture, because developers eventually stop supporting older system versions.

What to check when buying a TV

  • Platform: check that the app of your chosen service is available on the TV's system.
  • Codec and 4K support: HEVC decoding and HDR support will remain important.
  • Network: a wired Ethernet port and ideally Wi‑Fi 5 or Wi‑Fi 6 support.
  • Storage and performance: little internal storage and a slow processor often cause sluggish menus.
  • Updates: choose a manufacturer that provides system updates for several years.

Older TV? There is a solution

If your TV is not a smart TV, or its system no longer supports the service's app, connect a media player or set-top box via HDMI. That way even an older set can deliver a modern IPTV experience. Details: set-top boxes and media players.

Frequently asked questions

Why can't I find the app in my TV's store?

The app may not support your TV's platform or system version. Update the TV software or connect a supported media player.

Do I need a network cable for the TV?

It is not required but recommended: a wired connection is more stable than Wi‑Fi. See: Wi‑Fi or cable?

Can I send content from my phone to the TV?

Yes, if the app and the TV support casting, for example Chromecast. Streamy's player supports Chromecast.
